My favorite place

When you find your favorite place in the universe, you travel back there as oft as you can. Like many of you, I am my best self when I'm at the beach. I am "sitting on go" at all times ready to get back to that sweet little island, back to the low country, back to our little piece of heaven.

My car seems to know the route by heart now. I know when I get to the fork in the road  near I-95 that I could take the quicker route or I could take the road that passes through the heart of Yemassee to Old Sheldon Church so I can see that beautiful piece of history and drive though that stretch of road where the moss-draped live oaks create a canopy. I've always called it a tree tunnel.

And I love it. Love knowing that I am getting closer to that place where I am deep down happy. When I see that first marsh, I roll down my window to smell the Pluff mud. Y'all know what I'm talking about, that rich smell that some would turn their nose up at but to others it just means you're almost home. As soon as the scent of that salty mud wafts in, and the balmy breeze hits my face  I can feel my blood pressure lower. And I keep coming back for a dose of that calm that makes all the cares of the world go away even for just a short while.

What is your favorite thing about the Lowcountry, Beaufort, or Hunting Island?
