But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
Titus 3:9
Arguing about the law, fighting over genealogy. Nitpicking over dots and dashes. Titus is very clear: we must avoid that. It does not bring us any further and yet, we are all guilty of it. It is foolish and unprofitable. We experience the same in our time: controversies over how the law functions in our time. When will be the moment of Jesus’ return? At what age should we be baptized? Many arguments and only losers. Hard heads and cold hearts. Titus is warning us.
Why do we have that need to share our opinion with others? Do WE have all the wisdom to explain what the Bible says? Must we really ventilate our opinion? Let us go back to the words of Jesus. He never taught us to convince other people, but instead to testify of what the Spirit has done in our life. Through such a testimony the Spirit can work and it is only the Spirit who convinces! That's not our job!
Prayer: Father, I confess that I am so quickly convinced that I know things better than my brother or sister. And for me it is a pitfall to start a discussion over something instead of giving my testimony. Help me Lord to remember that discussions aren’t fruitful! They only sadden Your heart. Help me Lord to give more room to the Spirit within me. Amen.
